THE BLAST FURNACE

Updated: May 26, 2022

THE COMPETITION PROJECT FOR THE REVITALIZATION OF THE HUTA POKÓJ AREA AND THE ADAPTATION OF THE GREAT BLAST FURNACE

location: Ruda Śląska usable area: 2 580 m2 project: 2019

The revitalization project is an opportunity to create a place that will serve as a starting point of the restoration of this important part of Ruda Śląska landscape. Our primary goal while designing the building was to display and embrace the unique nature of the existing structure of the Blast Furnace. The building was designed in such a way to be only a background for the structure of the Blast Furnace. Therefore, the building was placed behind the already existing structure. We would like the recipients to perceive the facade almost as a white sheet of paper, a surface that is only a background to already existing complicated compositions created by pipes, trusses, and the stairs. The designed museum building and the already existing structures of the steelworks clash with each other and at the same time remain in constant dialogue, complementing one another and creating a unique element of the surrounding landscape. The complex consists of blocks in various sizes placed along the eastern and western edges of the development area. They create a specific frame for the already existing structure. On the other hand, the entire development area is covered by a remediation greenery belt. At the ground floor level, each of the blocks is a separate element with an individual entrance, and on the upper floors, the buildings are connected with one another, creating a functional whole. The last piece of the project is an observation tower located on the southern side, next to the control room building.
